INTRODUCING 05: MONOLITHIUM

doitcollective did this great interview with me… hear me blaaaahb.

Been a while since our last INTRODUCING article so about time to let the wider world know about another creative head we have been following with a keen interest. To  check back on the last Introducing with Big Dada’s melodic crunk king Offshore click here. From the North East of Scotland though, we jump across the Atlantic to the West coast of Canada to catch some words about influences, the local scene and what is next for rising Victoria BC beat maker, DJ and promoter MONOLITHIUM. It was just over half a year ago when the name first made an impact, an infectious no holds bar beats remix of Ricardo Villalobos’s classic ‘Easy Lee’ available on Error Broadcast constantly making into DJ sets and headphone walks through the city. Ironically at the same time I was making my way out to Canada for a Summer tour and to catch up with family and friends like Sandro who runs the Rinse Out in Calgary. We did a gig together and talked beats, bookings and happenings. One of the names that came up was Monolithium, who to my surprise lived just one big city away. Next stop was Vancouver where I met some local beatmakers and DJs, again big support for the Victoria man. Then ‘Simon & G-Funk’ dropped on Error Broadcast, a polished and genre-defying release of slick, deep, effortlessly funky and when required heavy instrumental beats, I was hooked - and so were many others. Gigs at Montreal’s prestigious MUTEK and Seattle’s Decibel festival as part of the Night Slugs showcase have followed quickly. International gigs and further releases beckon.
